"If you've ever tried to visit the Carmel Christkindlmarkt on a Saturday in December, you already know it's festive, lively… and packed." The market wrote that about itself in a July 2026 post on visiting during the week. The market's own season figures show why. Fewer people came in 2025 than in 2023, but the season was shorter, so each open day drew more of them. Carter Green on a market day is busier now than it was three years ago, and the calendar has fewer quiet days left.
The 2026 market opens November 21 and runs through December 24. If you live a few minutes from Carter Green, timing your visit matters more than ever.
Total attendance is down, but each day is busier
The market's 2026 press kit lists three seasons of figures side by side.
| Season | Total attendance | Days open | Median daily attendance | Market revenue | Vendor revenue | Ice rink revenue |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2023 | 321,900 | 28 | 9,500 | $1,683,068 | $7,132,559 | $316,591 |
| 2024 | 302,500 | 25 | 10,400 | $1,860,590 | $7,493,067 | $319,077 |
| 2025 | 297,100 | 24 | 10,900 | $2,133,147 | $8,102,838 | $307,632 |
Between 2023 and 2025, total attendance fell by about 25,000 visitors. Over the same years the market lost four open days, and the median day went from 9,500 people to 10,900. The press kit puts average daily attendance at roughly 11,500 in 2023 and roughly 12,400 in 2025. It also notes two days lost to weather in that span. Spending kept rising anyway. Vendor revenue grew by nearly $1 million over the two seasons, and ice rink revenue stayed about flat.
Visitors come from well beyond Carmel. Placer.ai tracking cited by the market found that nearly 1 in 6 visitors stayed at a hotel. The market has won the USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice award for Best Holiday Market in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023 and 2025. Out-of-town visitors who plan around a hotel stay tend to come on weekends. The weekday evenings are where nearby residents have the advantage.
The 2026 calendar has few quiet evenings
The market's posted 2026 hours are:
- Wednesday and Thursday: 4 to 9 p.m.
- Friday and Saturday: noon to 9 p.m.
- Sunday: noon to 8 p.m.
- Closed: Mondays, Tuesdays, Thanksgiving and Christmas Day
- Special hours: Nov. 25, noon to 9 p.m.; Dec. 21 to 23, noon to 9 p.m.; Dec. 24, noon to 4 p.m.
By those hours, the 2026 season has 25 open days, about the same as the last two seasons. Fourteen of them fall on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday. The market says December weekends draw large crowds, "especially in the evenings," and that the least busy times are typically Wednesdays and Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m.
Count those Wednesday and Thursday evenings on the 2026 calendar and there are only six on the regular schedule: December 2, 3, 9, 10, 16 and 17. Thanksgiving week and the final days before Christmas run on special hours. That makes Wednesday, November 25 the odd one out, a pre-holiday weekday open from noon. The market also says early-season visits are usually lighter than those closer to Christmas. Its earliest weekday evenings are the least crowded, and there are only a handful of them.
Rain helps too. The same post says rainy days bring "even fewer people," and that a passing shower is common.
Going early in the season also matters for shopping
Shopping is the other reason to go early. The market says inventory is most likely to be fully stocked early in the season, and anything that sells out, including the annual Glühwein mug, is not restocked. The mug usually sells out during the market's last week. The market orders each year's supply from the prior year's sales, and "while that number increases every year, we have always sold out." Each season brings new boot mugs and hand-painted Bier steins, so collectors who keep a set going have a reason to come in late November.
Weekday visits also mean more time with the makers. The market says vendors have more time to talk during the week. Each year, German artisans from the Erzgebirge region, Lauscha and Oberammergau travel to Carmel to demonstrate wood carving and glass blowing. Since 2022 they have worked in the Werkstatt, which has its own space on the Kinderplatz. The market's 2026 map shows more than 60 huts. The one vendor it marks as new this year is Ino Schaller Papiermaché, which sells paper-mâché ornaments and figurines.
Food lines move faster on weekdays as well. The market lists quicker service and easier access to the Glühwein Pyramid among the benefits of a weekday visit. The pyramid is 33 feet tall, carries more than 3,000 lights, and was the first of its kind brought to the United States. It serves seven types of Glühwein along with a non-alcoholic option.
Dates for the first week
The first week of the season has the most events. Opening weekend is also the busiest.
- Thursday, Nov. 19: Wundernacht. This is the market's 21+ preview night, two days before opening. VIP entry runs 5 to 9 p.m. and general admission 6 to 9 p.m. In April, WISH-TV reported that tickets would go on sale later in the year.
- Saturday, Nov. 21: Opening Ceremony and Tree Lighting. The opening ceremony runs 11:30 a.m. to noon and the tree lighting 6:30 to 6:45 p.m.
- Wednesday, Nov. 25: open from noon. This is the special pre-Thanksgiving day, and the market is closed the next day.
Opening Saturday tends to be crowded. WTHR reported that Carmel was packed on the Saturday of the 2025 opening weekend and that organizers added a shuttle to ease parking.
Several later events, including Sankt Nikolaustag, the German Sing-Along and Ornament Exchange, the Glühwein Gallop 5K and Military Appreciation Day, have conflicting dates on the market's events page. Each listing shows one date on its badge and another in its description. Check with the market closer to the season before planning around any of them.
Getting there on a weekend
If a weekend is the only option, the market recommends the shuttle over driving to the door. Admission and parking are free. A free weekend shuttle runs from a lot on College Drive about every 15 minutes. The market's own pages list two different street numbers for the lot, so check the exact address on the market's site before you go. The market's October 5 transportation guide says the shuttle is accessible and warns that weekend rideshare drop-off can be congested.
Road work may also affect your route. The City of Carmel's October 9 newsletter reported construction on northbound Range Line Road between Executive Drive and City Center Drive, with lane restrictions in place and all Range Line businesses open. The newsletter gives no end date, so check the city's updates before driving to Carter Green from the south.
The rink stays open after the market closes
The market closes on Christmas Eve, but the Ice at Carter Green does not. The city-operated rink's season runs from November 21, 2026 through January 31, 2027. It has limited hours on December 24, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., and is closed Christmas Day. That leaves more than five weeks of skating at Carter Green without the market crowds.
Skating has its own fee and needs a reservation. The market says tickets must be reserved online ahead of time at the rink's website, and that weekdays have more open tickets and fewer people on the ice. The rink's rates page currently lists:
- Ages 11 and up: $11 per session
- Ages 10 and under: $9 per session
- Skate rental: $4 per person
- Session length: 90 minutes Friday through Sunday, with two longer sessions on Wednesdays and Thursdays except during the holiday schedule in the last two weeks of December
The rates page is undated, so confirm prices when you book. When last checked in mid-October, the rink's ticket page said its online ticketing was not yet running. January hours also differ between sources. The Visit Hamilton County listing shows shorter January hours, closing at 8 p.m. Thursdays and 7 p.m. Sundays, while the rink's homepage lists 9 p.m. Thursdays and 8 p.m. Sundays through January 31.
For nearby residents, the best times are bookends to the season. Go to the market on a Wednesday or Thursday at 4 p.m. in early December, then come back to skate in January after the huts have closed.
